OBJECTIVES: Orthognathic surgery (OS) has evolved with technological advancements, notably through the implementation of computer-assisted orthognathic surgery (CAOS). This article aims to elucidate various types of CAOS and their efficiency and accuracy, supplemented by a thorough literature review focusing on their clinical applications in South Korea. STUDY SELECTION, DATA, AND SOURCES: A comprehensive search strategy was employed, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies published until December 2023 in the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases. The literature search was limited to articles written in English. RESULTS: Static CAOS demonstrated high precision, reduced operative time, and high accuracy, suggesting its potential reliability in orthognathic procedures. Dynamic CAOS presented a promising avenue for exploration, showing an accuracy comparable to that of traditional methods. The critical considerations for CAOS include accuracy, time efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Recent studies have indicated advancements in the time efficiency of static CAOS. Static CAOS requires less equipment and is more cost-effective than dynamic CAOS. CONCLUSION: CAOS offers clear advantages over conventional OS in terms of surgical convenience and accuracy in implementing the surgical plan. To achieve recognition as the gold standard method for maxillofacial deformity treatment, CAOS must overcome its limitations and undergo continuous verification via well-designed studies. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The introduction of CAOS, mainly static CAOS with high precision and reduced surgical time, signifies a notable advancement in OS. However, rigorous studies are warranted to validate CAOS as the gold standard for treating maxillofacial deformities.

With the growing demand for orthognathic surgery and other facial treatments, the accurate identification of anatomical landmarks has become crucial. Recent advancements have shifted towards using three-dimensional radiologic analysis instead of traditional two-dimensional methods, as it allows for more precise treatment planning, primarily relying on direct identification by clinicians. However, manual tracing can be time-consuming, mainly when dealing with a large number of patients. This study compared the accuracy and reliability of identifying anatomical landmarks using artificial intelligence (AI) and manual identification. Thirty patients over 19 years old who underwent pre-orthodontic and orthognathic surgery treatment and had pre-orthodontic three-dimensional radiologic scans were selected. Thirteen anatomical indicators were identified using both AI and manual methods. The landmarks were identified by AI and four experienced clinicians, and multiple ANOVA was performed to analyze the results. The study results revealed minimal significant differences between AI and manual tracing, with a maximum deviation of less than 2.83 mm. This indicates that utilizing AI to identify anatomical landmarks can be a reliable method in planning orthognathic surgery. Our findings suggest that using AI for anatomical landmark identification can enhance treatment accuracy and reliability, ultimately benefiting clinicians and patients.

Establishing a platform for the bioconversion of waste resources into value-added compounds is critical for achieving a sustainable and eco-friendly economy. Herein, we produced polyhydroxyalkanoate via microbial fermentation using cabbage waste as a feedstock and metabolically engineered Escherichia coli. For this, the hydrolysis conditions of cabbage waste were optimized by focusing on parameters such as substrate and enzyme concentrations to enhance the saccharification efficiency. The phaABC operon, which encodes key enzymes responsible for polyhydroxyalkanoate biosynthesis in Ralstonia eutropha H16, was overexpressed in E. coli. Using cabbage hydrolysate as the feedstock, this engineered E. coli strain could produce poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) with a polymer content of 26.0 wt % of dry cell weight. Moreover, malic acid in cabbage hydrolysate significantly enhanced poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) production; the addition of 0.5 g/L malic acid markedly increased poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) content by 59.9%. This study demonstrates the potential of cabbage waste as a promising raw material for the microbial production of polyhydroxyalkanoate.

Wild teas are valuable genetic resources for studying evolution and breeding. Here, we report the complete chloroplast genome of the ancient Korean tea 'Hadong Cheon-nyeon Cha' (C. sinensis var. sinensis), which is known as the oldest tea tree in Korea. This study determined seven Camellia sinensis var. sinenesis, including Hadong Cheon-nyeon Cha (HCNC) chloroplast genome sequences, using Illumina sequencing technology via de novo assembly. The chloroplast genome sizes ranged from 157,019 to 157,114 bp and were organized into quadripartite regions with the typical chloroplast genomes. Further, differences in SNPs and InDels were detected across the seven chloroplast genomes through variance analysis. Principal component and phylogenetic analysis suggested that regional constraints, rather than functional constraints, strongly affected the sequence evolution of the cp genomes in this study. These genomic resources provide evolutionary insight into Korean tea plant cultivars and lay the foundation for a better understanding of the ancient Korean tea plant HCNC.

Beauveria bassiana, a representative entomopathogenic fungus, is increasingly being utilized as an eco-friendly pest management alternative to chemical insecticides. This fungus produces a range of insecticidal secondary metabolites that act as antimicrobial and immunosuppressive agents. However, detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis related to these compounds remains scarce, we developed a method for the rapid analysis of these metabolites. Eight secondary metabolites (bassianin, bassianolide, beauvericin, beauveriolide I, enniatin A, A1, and B, and tenellin) were efficiently extracted when B. bassiana-infected Tenebrio molitor larvae were ground in 70% EtOH extraction solvent and subsequently subjected to ultrasonic treatment for 30 min. The eight metabolites were rapidly and simultaneously analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Orbitrap MS). Bassianolide (20.6-51.1 µg/g) and beauvericin (63.6-109.8 µg/g) were identified as the main metabolites in B. basssiana-infected larvae, indicating that they are likely major toxins of B. bassiana. Validation of the method exhibited recovery rates in the range of 80-115% and precision in the range of 0.1-8.0%, indicating no significant interference from compounds in the matrix. We developed a method to rapidly analyze eight insecticidal metabolites using UPLC-Q-Orbitrap MS. This can be extensively utilized for detecting and producing insecticidal fungal secondary metabolites.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article was to introduce a method for the digital application of three-dimensional (3D) diagnosis and treatment with a virtual articulator and 3D data. CLINICAL CONSIDERATION: With the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and intraoral and facial scans, we can create a virtual articulator and evaluate the mandibular position in maximum intercuspation and centric-related occlusion for the patient with an unstable occlusion and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Based on this, we treated a case using a digital mandibular position indicator (MPI) and fabricated a stabilization splint using a 3D printer. This approach eliminates the traditional impression or model mounting process and the analog face bow transfer. Furthermore, the design of the stabilization splint is accomplished using software. CONCLUSIONS: The approach outlined in this article offers the potential for a digital diagnosis and treatment process by seamlessly integrating CBCT, intraoral scans, and facial scans with a high degree of accuracy. This may enhance precision in diagnosis and treatment planning, especially for patients with complicated TMD, in addition to facilitating effective communication with orthodontic patients who require thorough attention. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Utilizing a virtual articulator and digital MPI for the occlusal evaluation of patients with TMD and unstable occlusion makes it possible to diagnose and analyze the occlusal condition accurately. This approach also allows for precision and efficiency in treatment.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are currently being investigated for their potential use as probiotics and starter cultures. Researchers have developed powdering processes for the commercialization of LAB. Previous studies have focused on identifying innovative cryoprotective agents and freeze-drying (FD) techniques to enhance the stability of LAB. In this study, adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) was employed to develop a strain with high FD tolerance and enhanced storage stability. Leuconostoc mesenteroids WiKim33 was subjected to heterotypic shock (heat and osmosis shock) to induce the desired phenotype and genotype. An FD-tolerant enhanced Leu. mesenteroides WiKim33 strain (ALE50) was obtained, which harbored a modified fatty acid composition and cell envelope characteristics. Specifically, ALE50 showed a lower unsaturated fatty acid (UFA)/saturated fatty acid (SFA) ratio and a higher cyclic fatty acid (CFA) composition. Moreover, the exopolysaccharide (EPS) thickness increased significantly by 331% compared to that of the wild type (WT). FD tolerance, which was evaluated using viability testing after FD, was enhanced by 33.4%. Overall, we demonstrated the feasibility of ALE to achieve desirable characteristics and provided insights into the mechanisms underlying increased FD tolerance.

Lactic acid is an important industrial precursor; however, high substrate costs are a major challenge in microbial fermentation-based lactic acid production. Coffee waste is a sustainable feedstock alternative for lactic acid production via microbial fermentation. Herein, the feasibility of coffee waste as a feedstock was explored by employing appropriate pretreatment methods and optimizing enzyme combinations. Coffee waste pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid along with a combination of Viscozyme L, Celluclast 1.5 L, and Pectinex Ultra SP-L achieved the 78.9 % sugar conversion rate at a substrate concentration of 4 % (w/v). Lactiplantibacillus plantarum WiKim0126-induced fermentation with a 4 % solid loading yielded a lactic acid concentration of 22.8 g/L (99.6 % of the theoretical maximum yield) and productivity of 0.95 g/L/h within 24 h. These findings highlight the viability of coffee waste as an eco-friendly resource for sustainable lactic acid production.

Maxillofacial skeletal surgery often involves the use of patient-specific implants. However, errors in obtaining patient data and designing and manufacturing patient-specific plates and guides can occur even with accurate virtual surgery. To address these errors, bespoke Snowman plates were designed to allow movement of the mandible. This study aimed to compare the stability of bespoke four-hole miniplates with that of a bespoke Snowman plate for bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO), and to present a method to investigate joint cavity changes, as well as superimpose virtual and actual surgical images of the mandible. This retrospective study included 22 patients who met the inclusion criteria and underwent orthognathic surgery at a university hospital between 2015 and 2018. Two groups were formed on the basis of the plates used: a control group with four-hole bespoke plates and a study group with bespoke Snowman plates. Stability was assessed by measuring the condyle-fossa space and superimposing three-dimensional virtual surgery images on postoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. No significant differences were observed in the condyle-fossa space preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively between the control and study groups. Superimposing virtual surgery and CBCT scans revealed minimal differences in the landmark points, with no variation between groups or timepoints. The use of bespoke Snowman plates for stabilizing the mandible following SSRO exhibited clinical stability and reliability similar to those with bespoke four-hole plates. Additionally, a novel method was introduced to evaluate skeletal stability by separately analyzing the condyle-fossa gap changes and assessing the mandibular position.

OBJECTIVES: Surgeons often encounter challenges when treating maxillofacial fractures using conventional methods that involve trimming or bending ready-made titanium plates for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) since it can be time-consuming, imprecise, and inconvenient. This retrospective case series aimed to introduce a novel bone reduction method that utilizes virtual planning, patient-specific surgical guides, and titanium plates. METHODS: Seven patients with mandibular symphysis or subcondylar fractures resulting from facial trauma underwent cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) or facial CT scans, and their medical histories were documented. Virtual surgery was conducted based on three-dimensional (3D) stereolithography images derived from CT scans using the FaceGide software (MegaGen, Daegu, Korea). ORIF was performed using patient-specific surgical guides and plates that were designed, printed, and milled. Radiographic, clinical, and occlusal evaluations were conducted at two weeks and six weeks postoperatively. Subsequently, 3D images from virtual surgery and postoperative CT scans were compared. RESULTS: The comparison of 3D virtual surgery and postoperative images revealed minimal surface differences of less than 1 mm. T-scan evaluations indicated that there were no statistically significant differences between the two- and six-week postoperative assessments. Favorable clinical outcomes were observed. CONCLUSION: This novel method demonstrated stable outcomes in terms of occlusion and healing, with no notable complications. Consequently, this approach may serve as a viable alternative to conventional methods. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Facial fracture surgery that utilizes patient-specific surgical guides and plates within a digital workflow can facilitate meticulous surgical planning, reducing the risk of complications and minimizing operation time.

BACKGROUND: Multi-dimensional facial imaging is increasingly used in hospital clinics. A digital twin of the face can be created by reconstructing three-dimensional (3D) facial images using facial scanners. Therefore, the reliability, strengths, and weaknesses of scanners should be investigated and approved; Methods: Images obtained from three facial scanners (RayFace, MegaGen, and Artec Eva) were compared with cone-beam computed tomography images as the standard. Surface discrepancies were measured and analyzed at 14 specific reference points; Results: All scanners used in this study achieved acceptable results, although only scanner 3 obtained preferable results. Each scanner exhibited weak and strong points because of differences in the scanning methods. Scanner 2 exhibited the best result on the left endocanthion; scanner 1 achieved the best result on the left exocanthion and left alare; and scanner 3 achieved the best result on the left exocanthion (both cheeks); Conclusions: These comparative analysis data can be used when creating digital twins through segmentation, selecting and merging data, or developing a new scanner to overcome all shortcomings.

Ticks are carriers of viruses that can cause disease in humans and animals. The longhorned ticks (Haemaphysalis longicornis; LHT), for example, mediates the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) in humans, and the population of ticks is growing due to increases in temperature caused by climate change. As ticks carry primarily RNA viruses, there is a need to study the possibility of detecting new viruses through tick virome analysis. In this study, viruses in LHTs collected in Korea were investigated and virus titers in ticks exposed to the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae JEF-290 were analyzed. Total RNA was extracted from the collected ticks, and short reads were obtained from Illumina sequencing. A total of 50,024 contigs with coding capacity were obtained after de novo assembly of the reads in the metaSPAdes genome assembler. A series of BLAST-based analyses using the GenBank database was performed to screen viral contigs, and three putative virus species were identified from the tick meta-transcriptome, such as Alongshan virus (ALSV), Denso virus and Taggert virus. Measurements of virus-expression levels of infected and non-infected LHTs failed to detect substantial differences in expression levels. However, we suggest that LHT can spread not only SFTSV, but also various other disease-causing viruses over large areas of the world. From the phylogenetic analysis of ALSV glycoproteins, genetic differences in the ALSV could be due to host differences as well as regional differences. Viral metagenome analysis can be used as a tool to manage future outbreaks of disease caused by ticks by detecting unknown viruses.

The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (Mesostigmata: Dermanyssidae), is a major pest that causes great damage to chicken egg production. In one of our previous studies, the management of red mites using entomopathogenic fungi was evaluated, and the acaricidal fungus Beauveria bassiana JEF-410 was selected for further research. In this study, we tried to elucidate the pathogenesis of B. bassiana JEF-410 and the defense mechanisms of red mites at a transcriptome level. Red mites collected from a chicken farm were treated with B. bassiana JEF-410. When the mortality of infected red mites reached 50%, transcriptome analyses were performed to determine the interaction between B. bassiana JEF-410 and red mites. Uninfected red mites and non-infecting fungus served as controls. In B. bassiana JEF-410, up-regulated gene expression was observed in tryptophan metabolism and secondary metabolite biosynthesis pathways. Genes related to acetyl-CoA synthesis were up-regulated in tryptophan metabolism, suggesting that energy metabolism and stress management were strongly activated. Secondary metabolites associated with fungal up-regulated DEGs were related to the production of substances toxic to insects such as beauvericin and beauveriolide, efflux pump of metabolites, energy production, and resistance to stress. In red mites, physical and immune responses that strengthen the cuticle against fungal infection were highly up-regulated. From these gene expression analyses, we identified essential factors for fungal infection and subsequent defenses of red mites. These results will serve as a strong platform for explaining the interaction between B. bassiana JEF-410 and red mites in the stage of active infection.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by dopaminergic neuronal damage. In this study, three tea extracts from Hadong, Korea, were evaluated in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced neurotoxicity damage model (C57BL/6 mice) for their therapeutic effects against PD: green tea (GT), semi-fermented tea (SFT), and fermented tea (FT). Theaflavin content in the teas increased but catechin content decreased with the degree of fermentation. In addition, SFT showed the highest theanine and γ-aminobutyric acid contents. SFT at a concentration of 25 µg/mL showed the highest activity in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay among all samples. Furthermore, the 2,2'-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical scavenging activity of 25 µg/mL SFT was higher than that of l-ascorbic acid. Fermented tea suppressed the expression of inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, and macrophage-1, as well as inhibited overexpression of apoptotic signals, including p-53, cleaved caspase-3, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1. Moreover, GT, SFT, and FT regulated the MPTP-induced oxidative stress-related factors, including superoxide dismutase, glutathione-S-transferase, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase 4. Fermented tea also alleviated MPTP-induced behavioral impairment and dopaminergic neuronal damage and reduced α-synuclein levels. These results indicate that fermented tea is effective for the treatment of neuro-inflammatory, neuro-apoptotic, and neuro-oxidative disorders.

Monochamus alternatus is a major forest pest that spreads pine wilt disease in pine trees as a vector of pine wilt nematodes. Chemical insecticides used as fumigants to control overwintering M. alternatus in forests are highly toxic to the environment, so we investigated entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana ERL836 as an eco-friendly and alternative material to control overwintering M. alternatus. In this work, we evaluated the insecticidal activity of B. bassiana ERL836 against M. alternatus adults, the possibility of fungal colonization on pine tree bark, and finally the control efficacy of fungal pre-treatment on pine tree logs against emerging M. alternatus adults in semi-field and field conditions. M. alternatus adults were killed on the pine tree logs pre-treated with the B. bassiana ERL836. White conidia were observed not only on the surface of the dead adults but also on the pine tree logs, suggesting that the adults were killed by the fungus on the pine. A formulated ERL836 powder treatment on larvae-infested pine logs showed high insecticidal activity against adults, similar to that with the fungal powder suspension treatment, but we demonstrated that using the fungal powder was simpler than using the suspension in field conditions. Even in the field condition, the fungal powder treatment showed high insecticidal activity against M. alternatus adults, which we attribute to its ability to maintain fungal activity for a long time in field conditions by covering the pine tree logs with a film during overwintering. We confirmed that the risk that fungus-infected M. alternatus adults would spread the fungus to other non-target forest insects was low. Thus, even a high-concentration treatment in a specific area is unlikely to transmit the fungus outside that area, so it can be safely used to control this pine wilt nematode vector in forest ecosystems.

CBCT scan, facial scan, and intraoral scan were obtained from initial visit. The virtual patient was created using the integration of these imaging modalities. Once the virtual patient was generated, digital workflow could be applied to initial patient consultation, diagnosis, treatment planning, virtual tooth setup, virtual treatment simulation, and post-treatment evaluation. integration of digital technology allows clinicians to improve diagnosis and treatment outcome. in addition, it allows for favorable patient communication. This technique eliminates the traditional impression process and complicated laboratory procedures for evaluating patient's occlusion during smile and habitual resting position. Based on this protocol, it is possible to create a digital virtual patient using CBCT, intraoral scan, and facial scan with a high accuracy of integration. it would be helpful for precision diagnosis and accurate treatment as well as favorable communication with patient.

Aphis gossypii, commonly known as the cotton aphid, is a widely distributed pest of agricultural crops and acts as a vector for many serious plant viruses. Cotton aphid shows high resistance to chemical insecticides due to rapid rates of genetic diversity as a result of its short life cycle, seasonal migration, and host alteration. As an alternative, entomopathogenic fungi can be used to control cotton aphids in an environmentally sound manner. However, little is known about how cotton aphids respond to fungal infection. In this work, a new Beauveria bassiana strain JEF-544 (Bb JEF-544) was selected and isolated through bioassays with high virulence against cotton aphid. Early response of cotton aphid to Bb JEF-544 infection was analyzed at the transcriptome level. Infected aphids were collected two days after treatment at 25% lethal time (LT25), and total RNA of non-infected and Bb JEF-544-infected aphids was independently subjected to sequencing. Infected aphids showed significant up-regulation of the insect hormone biosynthesis pathway. Bursicon (Burs) and crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) receptors involved in molting along with ecdysone synthesis were also strongly up-regulated in the aphid response to the fungal infection. In the immune response, melanization in the hemocoel was significantly up-regulated, while phagocytosis was less actively transcribed. In conclusion, cotton aphids protect themselves from Bb JEF-544 infection by activating the immune response including melanization and insect molting hormones to shed infected cuticles. In addition to describing the initial stages of Bb JEF-544 infection at the transcriptome level, this work provides potential treatment targets and insight into how fungal isolates can effectively be used to control this serious aphid species.

Thin film-based optical sensors have been attracting increasing interest for use in developing technologies such as biometrics. Multilayered dielectric thin films with different refractive indices have been utilized to modulate the optical properties in specific wavelength bands for spectral selectivity of Thin Film Narrow Bandpass Filters (TFNBFs). Progress in TFNBF design has been made with the incorporation of metallic thin films. Narrower bandwidths with higher transmittance have been achieved in specific spectral bands. In this work, Ti/TiO2/SiO2 based multilayer thin films were prepared using pulsed-DC reactive sputtering. Computer simulations using the Essential Macleod Program allowed the optimal number of layers and thickness of the multilayer thin films to be determined to efficiently tailor the optical path transmitting specific wavelength bands. The addition of Ti metal layers within dielectric (TiO2/SiO2) multilayer thin films significantly changes the cutoff frequency of transmittance at specific wavelengths. Representative 26 multilayer films consisting of Ti, TiO2, and SiO2 show lower transmittance of 10.29% at 400 nm and 10.48% at 680 nm. High transmittance of 80.42% at 485 nm was observed, which is expected to improve the spectral selectivity of the TFNBF. This work provides a contribution to future simulation based design strategy based on experimental thin film engineering for potential industrial development opportunities such as optical biometrics.
